The Penyapu bag, meaning broom in Malay, was the first of the barangan rumah collection to be conceptualized. The idea of the bag was simple; to create a functional, tassel-like bag that resembled a broom. The production of this bag, however, was not so straightforward.
The framework of the bag starts out as a cylinder; two rectangular pieces of leather whipstitched to each other on the sides, and an oval base piece attached to the bottom via a box stitch technique. The more tedious part of production starts when it comes to the tassels; 72 individually burnished and painted strips of leather, which are then folded in the middle and then subsequently tied onto the individually assigned holes on the bag. The flap at the top of the interior of the bag, or a “tongue”, was designed to fit in seamlessly with the way the tassels are attached to the bag, and to prevent theft but at the same time maintain ease of use.
Currently the Penyapu bag comes in a Perang or Hitam smooth French aniline calfskin. Contact us at ryan@ryanleekualalumpur.com for more information.
